This is what marriage is, said my husband after I dragged him to see Brokeback Mountain at the Denver Film Fest:

Marriage is pulling into the parking lot at the Pepsi Center, and the attendant asks if you are there to see the Avs hockey game, and you say, 'No, we're here for the gay cowboy movie at the film fest.'

And the attendant says, 'Aww, no charge, dude.'

Coming to the Denver Film Fest: one of the very best American writers, Annie Proulx, author of the excellent short story, "Brokeback Mountain," on a panel with the screenwriters who adapted the story for the big screen, Larry McMurty and Diana Ossana, and director Ang Lee.

Screenwriting is an art that apparently is best practiced by white men living in L.A. In the Wall Street Journal, Bridget Johnson analyzes the Writer's Guild of America 2005 Report on the state of the industry: women represent just 18% of employed film writers, while all minorities combined represent just 6%.

No wonder we get the same movies, made over and over again, ad nauseum.
